AP Lab 5 - Photosynthesis
Procedure: In this experiment, students measure the respiration of disks of spinach leaf. Using the syringe, all oxygen was evacuated from the leaf. Then the leaves were submerged in water. When photosynthesis occurs, free oxygen is produced, which gets trapped in the leaf. When enough O2 molecules are trapped in the leaf, the leaf floats to the top of the water. Students measure how long it takes for ratios of leaves to rise to the top of the water, which is considered proportional to the respiration rate. The independent variable is the amount of light to which the leaves are exposed.
